90 day ruling

Hi can anybody explain in simple terms please how the 90 ruling in 180 days applies for frequent trips to Spain. I understand you can only stay for a max of 90 days in any visit. Is the 180 days a forward projection from the point of first entry or is it looking back at the previous 180 days to ensure you haven't over stayed the 90 at any date of entry. My wife and I see it differently. We are looking at buying intending to stay several weeks at a time if that works. Thanks
