The fines are up to €10,000 and you can also be expelled from Spain and banned from re-entering Spain or the whole EU for up to 5 years.

I've only seen a couple of examples on other social media of people being fined - both were US citizens and both fined €500.

Can you be fined if you are a citizen?

Apologies, I've now edited this - they were both US citizens.

It's a maximum of 90 days in any rolling 180 days (there are calculators online that can help you work it out).

Note - this applies to the whole Schengen area, so if you have, for example, a weekend in Paris or a week in Italy, they all count - it's not just time in Spain.
