Hi. How does insurance and ITV compare to the UK?  I know there are loads of factors, but just in general.  Thanks.

We got insurance through Linea Direct (Direct Line in Spain).

We paid less than the equivalent would be in the UK, but be careful as the price quoted online went up by about 30% when we got the final quote (the agent advised the online price was 'just a guide' - I think it was a guide to attract you in!). However, the policy also covers anyone over the age of 25, which is handy.

I forgot - we also needed our padron. But I also have some relatives who were non-resident and not on the padron when they bought their car, so it must be possible.

A couple of other points...

There is a global shortage of certain silicon chips, which is severely impacting the production and delivery dates of new cars.

We bought from the Ford dealer in Lorca. The salesman didn't have good English, but there was a receptionist there with good English who translated for us. We also looked in the KIa dealership in Lorca, but were ignored by all the staff!

Hi there, we are also non residents. We called at the local Renault garage in Lorca and was looking at a new Dacia Sandero. The salesman said that we would require a padron before purchase.

That's a bit of a setback as legally you should not have a Padron unless you are resident, as it means the council (so to speak) are claiming government funds for you as a resident when you are not. I did a lot of research into this last year when we purchased our house, but maybe things have recently changed. It's a bit of a Catch 22 situation if not!! Or unless for some weird reason it's just for brand new cars.

Hi Barbara, I think possibly the padron requirement is maybe specific for buying a new car. The salesman who spoke very good English explained proof of house ownership in the form of a padron was required for the IVA on the new car.

Thanks for the good information, both.  We are in the early stages of planning to buy a car as non residents. Interesting re the Padron as I know we shouldn't have this as we are non resident. I wonder if a utility bill or house Title Deeds would suffice for address confirmation? Again,...

... thanks for the responses.

It can vary. We lived as non residents in Catalunya for 14 years and bought a second hand car to start off with. We were never asked for a Padrón. Subsequently we bought three new cars, no Padrón needed either. So when we moved to Almería & bought a year old car we were very surprised to be told we had to have a Padrón. What we didn't know was that it's just required for confirmation of address so our house deeds would have covered that.

Instead we put the car in our daughter's name and used her Padrón. That was fine but when we moved to our current house in Murcia we set about re-registering the car to my husband's name and our new address only to find it cost us €480 to do so!  All done now anyway. But the reason for the Padrón is to ensure any fines, road tax notifications or traffic infringements  etc. go to the correct address.

There is nothing complicated about buying a car regardless of whether it's new or second-hand - it's quite straightforward, but second-hand cars are quite expensive here.  Btw, most garages will have a second hand car selection available. Best of luck .

We rented till we were going to be here permanently 2 years ago.

We used a company based in UK who sourced the car we required (only needed our NIE)  and at a very good price

And we were met at the airport when we came over, brand new car all details tax paperwork etc. Sorted

ITV applicable once car is 4 years old

This is a possible alternative

Good luck
