The Mar Menor is in better condition now than for several years, if it was as polluted as some say it wouldn't be full of Fried Egg jelly fish which are sensitive to water quality never mind the thousands of fish you see happily swimming about. Yes sea weed is still a problem due to nitrates ente...

...ring the water but the councils spend millions clearing it up. The Mar Menor isn't as clean as the Mediterranean which isn't as clean as the Atlantic but neither is the Mar Menor a cesspit, it is in my opinion (my house overlooks the lagoon) improving slowly but steadily.

Thank you for all the replies ... it seems I have opened a hornets nest on this topic !! We hope to come in my caravan in Jan till April . The site is at the bottom of the Mar Manor near Mar de Cristal. It seems the water state is different in different places ? Any idea what its like around that area ?

Oh, you really are getting desperate now! I'll look out for the news of the dysentery outbreak on tomorrow's local news then, shall I?

Yep - understand all of this including the uninformed statements!  Have had a holiday home in Los Alcázares since 2002 and had many happy times with family and grandkids spending hours at the beach and in and out of the water, with not a single ill effect!  We were there again in the first 2 weeks in June this year and the grand kids loved the water!

Yes, there is agriculture run-off, which has now been legislated against within 1.5 km of the beaches but takes time to have effect.  Also millions of € spending on storm water run-off prevention from the plains at the rear of the town, to help stop more mud and nitrates etc flowing with the rain runoff into the Mar Menor.  Despite all this we have found that the mar Menor remains very attractive and swimmable, despite what colour the flags are!  In addition, I have been a member of Sailing Association Mar Menor since 2006 - and, as many will know, dinghies capsise regularly, causing frequent involuntary swimmers!  Not a single incident has been reported of adverse effects from these soakings and also, many sailing bodies come regularly to sail in the Mar Menor very successfully with both experienced sailors and young children (and Schools) sailing small boats.  Nothing has kept them away!

My advice to any prospective newcomer is to take all of the hype with a pinch of salt (no pun intended!) and get in the water - you will be the best judge, look at the thousands of visitors on the beach (and the very many Spanish) and in the water, enjoying a great time and visiting the many Chiriguitos that are bustling with patrons - need to say more?  Nuff said - still a great holiday destination (or a good place to live)!

Regards, George

Thank you George, a very balanced & timely summary of the Mar Menor situation. Bottom line, these things take time & between the EU & the Spanish authorities combined I'm confident things will only continue to get better.

I don't swin in it myself but then I don't swin full stop but I have observed how much things have improved visually in recent years.  I have also noticed the large number of swimmers there & have heard nothing about anyone becoming ill  as a result.

I hope you and your grandchildren continue to enjoy this remarkable amenity to the full for many years to come .

It's lovely up around San Pedro del Pinatar at the Northern end of the Mar Menor. Can't comment on other areas as I haven't been.

I know measures have been put in place to deal with what's wrong but it will take a few years I understand to deal with the full extent of it. It's much better though than what it was....

...

Living in El Carmoli i can say that nothing is being done to resolve the problem and the water quality is a disgrace. Anyone that believes the spin should pop over and see the reality.

Yes, you are located in a different part of the Mar Menor. Up around San Pedro it's very nice but I have heard there are areas where it is anything but.

My understanding is that significant measures are being undertaken on an ongoing basis to improve things. Maybe they haven't reached El Carmoli yet. It takes time to resolve such a huge issue.

I have my doubts… the source should be the first fix surely. Money talks and agriculture I guess is the areas major source …

Yes some mesures are taking place.. so we wait and see. Hopefully one day.

Indeed, I think it's a mammoth task. It was a combination of excessively heavy rain and flooding plus the nitrates from the campo being allowed to flow unhindered into the Mar Menor.

With rainfall predicted to become more common & frequent with climate change issues  it's going to add to both the cost and the workload.

But at least something is being done and  the problems have been identified. Hopefully efforts will continue to benefit the entire lagoon area.
