Have some friends arriving at Alicante airport this coming week so my question is are we allowed to wait inside the airport for them at the exit by the sliding doors where passengers leave air side (where before the pandemic we all met arriving passengers) or do we have to wait completely outside the airport building?

Hiya. You are not allowed inside the airport unless you are traveling.
Best to meet outside as David said, or near machine that you pay for car park.
