Waiting for them to change it from 90 days in six months to 180 days in 12 months.

Read about the ESS,, which comes into effect this year, 2023...

Once operational, the EES will replace the “wet stamping” of passports and will also provide border officers with an automatic countdown of how many days Britons have spent in Europe. Under post-Brexit rules, Britons without the right to work or reside in the EU can only stay for 90 days in any 180-day period.

All the info about EES on the link below for those that might be interested.

EES Info

If it is anything like the automated passport gates at Alicante airport it will be a major farce.

Is there any update with the situation of Spain applying to the EU on relaxing the x 90 day rule for British citizens ??????

TIA for any updates on this !

The chances of this happening are very close to zero. It would require all the Schengen countries to agree. In fact what is going to happen with the new computerised system from Dec 2023 onwards is much much closer monitoring of non-Eu travellers to ensure the 90/180 rule is followed.

Thank you for your reply

I live in Spain and done so for many years and have Residencia

My question was based on numerous articles on this subject reported in the media !

I never voted to leave Brexit, but everyone has a right to their choice !

I wish people would just answer the question and if they haven't a clue what is going on, then just to keep their personal opinion to themselves.

Quite right....there are still some angry people out there unfortunately. To say we (British) should not be a special case is to ignore the fact that we give  EU citizens 180 days in one hit so why not reciprocate? It'll happen soon I think as Spanish tourism is just being hit too hard (Portuguese too).

It would be great if you could post all these articles on the subject that you have seen, as you seem to be the only one to have seen them. The deal has been done and all the wishing in the world and all the feeble petitions for people to sign are not going to change anything. Nothing is being di...

There has been plenty of press and Tv reports stating France is considering 180 day stretch per year instead of 2x90 days. Perhaps you don’t watch the news or read the newspapers. Many people are hoping Spain will follow France and consider this.

What sort of "updates" are you hoping for? The UK voted to leave the EU and is now a third country as far as the EU is concerned. All third countries have to abide by the third country rules and the UK will never be given any special treatment that other third countries, such as the USA, will not...

... be given too. You can't expect to vote for sovereignty and not expect the countries that you choose to pull away from, not to support their own sovereignty! Although only about one-third of UK voters actually voted to leave the EU, the entire country will now have to suffer the effects of this badly thought-out strategy that is leaving the UK as a little island that has chosen to isolate itself from its closest neighbours and is now reaping the "rewards".

Cannot wait until Spain has to finally pay their fair share of EU money. Without the UK (and Germany) paying the lions share your taxes are going to quadruple. And we all know that Spain will relax whatever rules they have got because they need the British money from people wanting to move there. Errrrm like the driving license rule. Funny how you had to have a Spanish one and now you don’t. Like I said......funny that!

Although I have owned a villa in spain for 8 years the 90 day thing doesn’t bother me in the slightest I just holiday in NON EU COUNTRIES & spend my money there and they seam extremely grateful. I don’t think it will be TOO LONG before the Spanish finance minister & Spanish Tourism board waken up to missing the GBP . ( this is only in my opinion and I am allowed that even though I’m not in the EU)or a third world country as we are now known!

The UK is not a "third-world country". It is known as a "third country", meaning that it is a non-EU country! It should not be forgotten that Spain is a member of the EU and the EU as a group, has made the rules regarding the entry and staying rules regarding third country citizens and not the individual countries, who must abide by the rules that they have agreed to.
