Hi Matt,

Bit confused.  Do you mean Sierra Golf is terrible or Sucina is terrible or both are terrible for swarms of flying fiends?

Hi Anne,

We have a place in Sierra Golf and don't have a massive issue with flies. We eat breakfast and BBQ out on the patio most days - yes, you will get the odd persistant fly, but on the whole it's not an issue for us.

Having said that we holiday there as opposed to living there full time.

Regards

Tim

Anne,

I have given you a sensible, level headed report of our experiences on Sierra Golf. The only potential reasons for the obvious disconnect here in opinions would be either our relative positions on Sierra Golf - we are on the very southern loop, which is actually quite near the waste bins - or the situation has got MUCH worse since we were last there which was Jan 2020.

I guess from your previous posts that you've found a property you want to buy elsewhere, so I wish you all the best with that, I'm more than happy to share my experiences of Sierra Golf, but it's probbaly best on a private post.

Thank you, Tim.

Mix POVs and reports of experiences.  It's been really helpful.

Level of plagues seems entirely to depend on location/situation.  Proximity to certain land features!

As we will be look at long-term living it's so handy to have forums like this.

Hi Ginger,

Thanks for reply.

Yes, we are fully aware of flies and mozzies (don't forget the midges - they've got quite a bite in Spain) in the summer season.  And still enough around in rest of year too!  But a few postings indicated unproportionate swarms of dung flies in the summer in Sucina.

Like most people, we've spent enough time abroad, over the years, to acquaint ourselves with some of the 'minor' less attractive issues of holidaying abroad.

I'm sure you had no intention of being patronising but let me explain. We've always lived in villages, surrounded by countryside, in UK.  And are fully aware of farmers methods of fertalizing crops and the reason for the practice!  In fact, we applaud the use of natural fertalizers as opposed to chemical one.

However, in various places in Spain (we always over winter too) we've never had to sit at local restaurants and swat away flies with one hand whilst eating with the other.  Yes to swatting away the odd fly or insect but not a barage.  Nor have we opened our car door and found ourselves sharing the ride home with upto 20+ flies which got in.  That is beyond acceptable or normal when it is quite possible to reduce the problem by spraying.  Especially when it comes to safeguarding the health of the human lives of nearby villagers.

It's an issue which I hoped to hear had been settled amicably between local government; farmers and villagers.  I believe there is an EU directive on this very subject!

Could never eat food at this time of year ,its awful

Ah, Ginger,

We also lived in France.  The Pyrennes Atlantique region.  About 40 ks from Biarritz.  We never had any particular problem with flying fiends there either.  We loved our time there but the winters can be very cold.  In our older age we started coming to Spa...

...in and now have decided to settle permanently.  Which region did you live in?

We lived in the southern Charente for 13 years, an agricultural area, flies were a problem during summer, especially when crops were harvested. The fields during growing season were regularly fertilised so another attraction for flies.

We live in Murcia and have recently moved from the mountains in Alicante. We have found the flies here to he a lot less. We have our houses sprayed by a local garden centre. He does most of our urbanisation and it costs €30 each.  It may cost more for individual houses.

Hi Sue,  thanks for this.  Good to know that if we do buy in Sucina there is a service like this available.
