I agree, how do you know the place you want to rent is good, it could b3 a complete tip. When you arrive then start to look, finalise etc, a couple of nights in a b&b should give you time. Travelling from Bilbao I would stop over somewhere. The animals are going to need breaks which will hold...

... up progress. We found most motorways are devoid of service areas, these tend to be on the old main roads. M

Thank you Roberto

When I have looked up the route from Bibao - it says I can do 913 km in just over 8 hours! So dont know whether to make a run for it or take a more leisurely apporach.

I will all depend on the dogs I guess

Hi,

Not sure about the estate agent bit, but have done the Bilbao/ Santander journey a few times, and with 2 dogs. First dont do France it will take 3 days and cost as much with petrol and tolls as the luxury ferry.

The ferrys are now like cruise ships with bars and pools. It's a 24 hour crossing.

You can either get kennels or a dog friendly cabin, which will take 2 small dogs, but they get booked up quickly.

The drive is roughly 8 hours plus stops. Easily doable in a day, but that will depend on the time the ship docks. Get a hotel somewhere around Madrid, not in it, as it's about halfway if it docks after 12 noon.

All motorway and you'll only see traffic around the Madrid orbital. Tolls are no more than €20.

Good luck!

Hello Nick

Thank you so much, that boosts my confidence. Im taking ferry from ireland, so it will be a 2 night sailing arriving at 8am on a sunday, so i think i am going to try and make it to murcia in the one day. My dogs are in the house most of the time normally, so i believe they can take it, my lazy girls 😁. But i will need to get something for travel sickness for them.

I’ve driven it many times and indeed 3 weeks ago I drove from Sucina to Bilbao to catch the Kerry to Rosslare (with my wife and toddler) and it is a fairly easy 8 hour drive with some fairly low cost tolls (use the toll roads). On the way back to Sucina last week I went from Cork to Roscoff France and stopped in San Sebastián near the French/Spanish border,  so it was a 2 day drive and the French bit is the hardest. You should Drive the route down passing by Madrid and there are many spotless service areas with strict Covid preparation, I was pleasantly surprised. What is very important is what time will you set out from Bilbao? If it is before midday then definitely a one day drive .. if not you should stop and there are plenty of hotels near the motorways for circa 70 Euro per night.
