these are v good helpful posts I think  From what you've said I think you might like Sucina. It's about 20 mins from the Mar Menor. Traditional small town with good amenities and some ex pat's. Very good road to it as well. A nice size if you want amenities but not a bustling busy plac...

...e & it's within easy reach of bigger amenity areas.

San Pedro del Pinatar is another good option, open all year round. Tourists there are mostly Spanish  and there are ex pat's too although not as many as say San Javier or Los Alcazares.  It's a bigger town than Sucina, has a lovely promenade, cycle ways, a living town with a nice town square and while some hostelarias close in winter others don't. Excellent shopping facilities.  It is close to Torrevieja but not nearly as built up but I mention it as it has many more options and an easy drive from both Sucina and San Pedro.

In the same area there are plenty of other inland towns with very good access roads and, if course, the whole Costa is well serviced with both Murcia International & Alicante airports. There is a very good rail network too..

I'd say cost of life living is around a third cheaper overall than Ireland where I'm from, maybe a bit better if you're from the UK.  Crime is low like most places outside the main bug cities but a bit of handbag snatching and opportunistic thieving goes on, just he prudent. No serious crime that I know of.

Best of luck luck with your search. If you have any questions you can private message me.

A really good, informative post.

I would add a cautionary note, however. Be aware that a number of areas around the Mar Menor are prone to flooding (particularly around San Pedro, San Javier and Los Alcazares) when the recurrent Autumn storms known as the 'Gota Fria' hit. We lost a car there outside a hotel 4 years ago; it was parked on a road which quite literally became a sizable river overnight.

If I was thinking of buying property there I would look for something with a little elevation and check first that it would be possible to insure it.

Good luck with your search.

Have a look at Mar Menor Golf Resort.  Lovely resort and you don’t have to play golf to live there.  It has an all year round community.  Lots of facilitrs The course is currently closed and is being revamped.  It’s about 7mins by car to LA.  It didn’t flood in the recent worst Gota Fria.

Hi. We are coming to mar menor in 2 weeks. We have hired a car to explore with a permanent move in mind. Any tips?

The Mar Menor and the area surrounding La Manga is party town and you won't find what you are looking for. My advice would be to head west towards Puerto de Mazarron, Aguilas and Lorca and get off the beaten track as the Puerto and Aguilas in particular are both rammed late July and throughout August. Good luck !

Thank you. This is precisely why we hired a car so we can explore back from the coast. 😁

I’d hardly call Los Alcazares on the Mar Menor a party town. I have a place approx 7mins from LA by car. I visit several times a year apart from Aug/July and I would say it’s very quiet.

I agree, it's mostly older folk who favour the area apart from the summer months when it's more of a mix but definitely much quieter in off season

I don’t know about La Manga but San Pedro del Pinatar is on the Mar Manor and definitely not a party town. It attracts mostly but not exclusively Spanish tourists and I have detected no trouble spots, crime is confined to opportunistic occurances that you will find everywhere and people very friendly and helpful.  It’s sizeable so plenty of shops, banks garages - all the things you’d find in a town of 20+ K people. Wonderful walks, cycle paths and close to both Cartegena and Murcia city as well as having two airports close by, Murcia International & Alicante.

Added to that if you prefer rural,  Sucina, Balsicas and many other small Spanish towns are to be found not too far from the coast so you have the best of both worlds. Nearby there is Santiago de la Ribera and Los Alcázares, the latter is a bit too big for me personally but is a good town with excellent amenities. Further north en route to Torrevieja you have Pilar de la Horadado, another good town, agricultural mainly but close to the beaches as well and good dining opportunities, golfing etc.

in short the Costa Calida  generally plus it’s hinterland will provide most people with what they probably need. It’s not an area for “fashionistas” like Costa del Sol can be but if you enjoy the casual, laid back style of living that Spain is so famous for, its a good choice in my opinion. Hope this helps.
