Hi I’m travelling from St Malo to Mazzeron by car. The journey is 16 hrs non stop however about half way I’m looking to have an overnight stay. Has anyone done this journey recently are there any pitfalls to avoid any recommendations on stops or hotels for me to consider. Halfway is around Biarritz give or take. Anyone’s advice or stop off points would be much appreciated we are well travelled just we havent done this route before. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

We did a similar trip from Caen last year and we stopped off at Pamplona, in Northern Spain which is slightly over halfway to the south of Spain.

Would highly recommend a hotel there called El Torro Spa & Hotel. Reasonably priced (on weekdays) and a lovely setting in which to stay. When setting off from there we found heading to Valencia rather than going near Madrid was a slightly quicker route down to our destination in Mojacar.

Toll roads in Spain a lot cheaper than France so if you are looking to avoid them worth doing so in France, but in my opinion not so much so in Spain.

I hope your trip goes well.

Chris

Hi Chris thank you for replying

We will look at Pamplona and the hotel. We were looking at Biarritz initially but I think we will follow your route and learn as we go along.

maybe we buy a bigger van if we like the journey thanks again Richard

Last year we stayed at the Hotel Best Western Kemaris in Biarritz. We wanted to spend time in Biarritz itself, both in the evening of arrival and the following morning without using the car, so wanted a place in town where we could walk to most things and that had off-road parking. We went in March so it wasn't too expensive (65€-ish), but I think in summer the cost goes up a lot.

Hi thank you for your comments. We started to look at Biarritz but unfortunately struggled to get anywhere (wrong time of year I guess) actually this was the reason why I asked the community here. We will try Biarritz in the future though. It’s great to hear other people’s experiences saves me making the mistakes 😂 thanks again for finding the time to comment

We have stayed several times at Olite, again near Pamplona, beautiful walled town with a palace and a lively square. We stayed at a small hotel, sorry I can't remember the name and at the Parador, both very nice.

Thank you. Pamplona is where we are tonight. I’m shattered 12 hr drive from Brittany but the recommendations are thankfully great.
