...ring, you will also need to carry your passport. The UK government further advocates obtaining (FOC), a Car Hire Code. These can be obtained from the "Share Driving Licence" service on www.gov.uk or by calling 0300 083 0013 up to 21 days in advance. I've hired cars in Spain several times since this Code was introduced, and from different hire companies, some even run by British ex-pats, and I've never been asked to produce such a code, or even heard mention of it. It's possibly just another ill-conceived piece of beaurocracy from the tiny Walter Mitty mind of the convict (presently) running the country (into the ground) - but since it's free, why take the risk of potentially "falling at the first hurdle" when trying to hire a vehicle.

Finally, for those thinking a little bit "outside of the box" you can't buy a 2nd hand car for the duration of your stay, then sell it on afterwards when you leave, without an N. I. E number - for starters!
