On electricity side. Check wiring and your electricity provider setting. They limit your electrical flow in Spain and you may be say on 1.1  which is okay without air con  but need to ask provider to push you up higher say to 1.3 so your apartment  can cope with air con. If you dont you risk the box tripping when you turn on your kettle same time as air con. It will increase the monthly charge on electric bill. You will find the existing setting figure somewhere on your electricity bill

Also the wiring, I replaced a gas boiler with electric one. All done with no hassle. A few months later I smelt burning in the flat.  The plumber had connected the boiler okay but the plug for boiler was also used with washing machine and when both on , the load melted the electric cable.. so I had to get electrician in to install separate leads to fuse box for them

Good luck

Austin

Oh wow! You wouldn’t think an experienced electrician would do that! I will definitely ensure we get this checked thank you for the tip Austin, that’s really useful to know.

Also the point on the electrical output, you’d expect it would be the other way around and they’d whack you up to the highest output in order to get more money off you ha ha. Will definitely ask that question once we get connected.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide some advice. Really appreciated.

Don't forget that if you need to upgrade your electric supply from 3.3 kw to say 5.0 kw your standing charge will double.

So you need to be aware of this particularly if it is a holiday home with long periods of no electric use.

I installed air con a few years ago. I cannot remember the cost (about 800 per unit I think)  but the ones which are both hot n cold  as it does get very cold in winter. I used them the first few summers as it does get violently hot. But when I stopped using it or limited the use, ...

... and reverted to a fan / fans, I found outside heat a lot more bearable.  So I stick to fans at night now and limit use of air con so I adjust to daily heat better.  I found using air con at night I'd wake up in middle of night dehydrated completely.  In winter they are excellent  to be able to switch heat on. Most apartments in Spain dont have insulation so when it gets cold on a winters evening , it can feel colder than UK.

I've no regrets of installing the air con.

Thanks Austin,

I was thinking along the same lines as yourself, aw we won’t be living there full time we won’t acclimatise like people who are there all year so we will feel the heat coming from the cold wet UK.

Do the use of fans whack your electricity bills up? I’m hoping I will be spending most of my time outside on my roof terrace ha ha.

I will definitely invest in some fans as I also don’t like air con on all night, I’m nesh and like the heat :) husband likes the cold so he can have the fan.

Hoping we get to meet some of you lovely people who have been so helpful.

Here’s to seeing the back of lockdown.

Take care

Lorraine & James xx

That doesn’t sound too bad a price Steve, and probably around what I was thinking. Thank you for that, I will check them out.

Even better! I can’t wait to get over there and see the apartment I’m buying lol. Whilst I’ve seen it with my agent online, not the same as viewing it in real life!

Any suggestions on places to buy furniture or white goods? I know IKEA isn’t too far away but any suggestions would be great :)

We bought most of ours from IKEA which is only about 25 minutes away, they also deliver and you can buy online, for the white goods Carrefour and Leroy Merlin are probably the best value. Condado is a great place I'm sure you will love it.
