I have non-resident neighbours who came over for 17 days in April and then came over again on 17 May with the intention of going back on 14 June. They were then coming out mid August for two weeks with family.

Unfortunately on 8 June my neighbour was admitted to hospital and is still there. She is very poorly so it is looking very unlikely that she will be well enough to fly for another few weeks.

The dilemma is therefore that they will exceed their 90 days if she has to remain in Spain because of illness and if she does manage to return within the 90 days won’t be able to make the August holiday with the family. They are willing to pay a fine, however, if necessary.

The question is, does anyone know if the rules can be relaxed because of serious illness? They would of course be able to back this up with hospital reports.

Any advice would be very welcome.
