I think that you would definitely be right in thinking that San Pedro del Pinatar, Lo Pagán and Santiago de la Ribera would be really good places to investigate further. We're in the middle of winter and yet all these areas are relatively buzzing with local people and some tourists too. We have ...

...a wonderful selection of supermarkets and the sort of shops that you need on a regular basis. There is definitely no feeling of those towns being empty or closed.

Many thanks for your input. Will be concentrating on these areas when over at the end of the month.

The water quality of the Mar Menor is deteriorating.  Lots of info online.  It’s worth doing your research if the beach is important to you.

Also perhaps look at Torre De La Horadada, it’s 20mins south of Los Alcazares but has the advantage in that it’s on the Mediterranean.

Thank you for that. Certainly something to think about and will try and have a drive up there if time allows.

Hi Chris and Linda,

We were in the same position last summer and found our property through Chersun. We have bought in a brand new development in Santa Rosalia, Los Alcazares and although it is still in the initial development phase, the vast range of prices and properties are good. We have been once in the summer, once during October and also just before Christmas. It was definitely quieter during the "winter" month but still nice and some of the restaurants were busy. It looks as though there are lots of things to do, you just have to join a few facebook groups and gather everyone's local knowledge. It is best to try and decide what you want property wise and hopefully this will help refine your research. Good luck!

Thanks for the info.  All these little bit and pieces from you all has helped us to refine where we would like to buy and also what type of property.  Chris will probably be concentrating on Los Alcarzares to Lo Pagan, San Pedro which, for us, would probably fit all the requirements on our tick list.  Hopefully, when he goes out at the end of the month he can find a bar full of ex pats to talk to.

Hello everyone,

My wife and I have decided that now is the time to try and find a holiday home in Spain for us in the winter months as well as family for summer visits and Mar Menor would seem to be an excellent area based on weather, transport links, beaches etc. to look for a property.  I am making an ini...

...tial visit to the south of Mar Menor over the period 28 - 31 Jan 22 based in Mar De Cristal and would appreciate any advice on where/areas to visit, estate agents and if anyone is willing to share their experiences over property buying in the area then that would be much appreciated.

Best wishes from a cold and dreary UK

Chris and Linda

We are doing the same and are here in Mar Menor now so all replies to this have been useful for me too!

We have made an offer on a house in Los Alcazeres and saw Notary & Solicitor yesterday for our NIE number, bank account setup etc. We were originally looking at properties in Estrella de Mar but after going to the area we realised it was too quiet and the beach was more mud than sand.

After exploring a lot of the areas around here Los Alcazeres is perfect for us as it's not too quiet but not too busy.

I'll be keeping a close eye on this forum for advice and tips

We had a one bed flat in Lo Pagan for 4 yrs then we bought a larger flat in Santiago de la Ribera which is quieter, about 1-2 miles further along the coast. Both towns have a Spanish feel to them. We usually go to Lo Pagan in the evenings as it's quite lively. There's a lovely walk/bike ride from Lo Pagan to Santiago along the promenade, so it's very easy to go from one town to the other. Both towns get busy in summer, especially July and August but unlike other towns in this region, there is life all year round. In Lo Pagan there's a great restaurant and bar called Rubio 360° overlooking the sea. There is some pollution of the Mar Menor which is a huge lagoon and fine for a daily swim, the water is shallow and still, so it's safe for children, plus there are also free mud baths which are good for joint pain. However, If we want a day out with big beaches, real waves and a holiday atmosphere, we go to beaches on the Mediterranean side such as Playa de la Horadada, La Torre, Mil Palmeras, which are all about 20-30 mins drive. In Summer these beaches are quite international, lots of Brits, Scandinavians, French, German etc, nice bars and restaurants, some on the beach and a bit more expensive than Lo Pagan. The whole Mar Menor area is great, property prices are good compared to other areas in Spain and I can highly recommend Raol of 'Topcasas' just behind the Neptuna Hotel in Lo Pagan if you are looking at property to rent or buy. Good luck!
